Musings: My Big Brother – Tesla!

November 19, 2017

This is my big brother Tesla. He is a rescue just like me and we think he is now 10 years old. He has been with my new family for three years. Mom and Dad rescued him through the Oregon Humane Society. His story makes me very sad, and very angry (and puppies shouldn’t get angry)! But I am so glad he came to be my BIG Brother!

Tesla was first named, Abraham Nightshade! A funny sort of name isn’t it. But it is also very serious. Abraham Nightshade – or A.N. are the evidence markers for Tesla. This represents the grid markers from when he was discovered in a terrible place, a puppy mill like I came from, but his place was in southern Oregon. Tesla was one of 51 puppies who were saved that day, 41 came to Portland and the remaining puppies stayed in the southern Oregon community.

They think Tesla was seven years old when he was discovered in a cage. A cage they are pretty sure he stayed in most all of the seven years of his life. They also think he was one of their stud dogs (he is beautiful), as he needed to be neutered before he could be adopted. His fur was a mess, he was very thin, in addition to needing to be neutered, he was dewormed four times, and had both eye and ear infections. His teeth were so bad that he had to have 14 pulled and then Mom and Dad had another two pulled last year (they had broken off from long ago).

When Mom first saw him, from an email she receives from OHS whenever a ShihTzu pup becomes available, he had a “medical tag” and a lot of people won’t adopt because of this. But we soon learned this was because of all the surgery he had to have. Sweet Tesla, he wasn’t potty trained, had never been on a leash, didn’t know what a toy was and was “indifferent” (I think that means he didn’t care) about treats.

More than anything, Tesla needed to be loved, like so many other ShihTzu puppies, and so many other rescue puppies – and boy did he find a lot of love in my new house!

Mom was so excited when she saw her two blondies striking a mutual accord! We were sleeping together on the couch. He still gets a little grouchy at me and I have learned not to startle him, because this scares him. I think he has lost some of his hearing from being an older dog and al the ear infections. But Mom said this was a definite breakthrough.

Sunday Morning and Living is Easy!

November 19, 2017

Good morning Sunday!! Imagine the World if every puppy could wake up cradled in the arms of their Mom or their Dad. Hearing her/his heart beating and knowing you are safe and loved. Wow!

Dad feels better today! I can tell because he is telling Mom stories! He is so funny and I love to hear his laugh.

I think it will be a great day. It’s certainly starting out just that way! Now for just five more minutes to snooze!

Good Morning Saturday…

November 18, 2017

Good morning all!! Happy Saturday! Mom reminded Dad to put my sweater on before our morning walk! Porsche, too! It’s only 36 degrees this morning! Brrr!! But it’s toasty warm inside snuggled with my Dad and siblings! Mom is headed out to get a haircut. I wonder if she’s going to the puppy spa like me? Hmmm. Guess we will see! Have a great day! Let the adventures begin!

Musings: Week Three in My New Home…

November 17, 2017

Shelby here – or as Dad spelled it this morning “Shelbe” – silly Dad, he needs to learn how to spell my name! Or maybe I might change it.. Hmmm… Mom said I could if I want to!

Tonight marks the third week in my new home! I continue to settle in and am bonding well with my new siblings and I love my Mom and Dad. I have learned to give kisses and I love when they call my new name! I spend every day with my Dad and my siblings while Mom is at work, and am so excited when she comes home and I can cuddle with her on the couch. I didn’t think I would ever be this loved!!

We have had a good week. My sweet brother Lincoln is feeling much better and has had a good week. He is my snuggle buddy at night and let’s me stay close to him, so I am not afraid. He is a fun puppy and I know one day soon he will be running with me. I am so glad he is better, it sure scared me when he didn’t feel well and was sick. Tesla, my oldest brother is spending time closer to me and I know now to not be such a super excited puppy with him. Although tonight when Mom got home, I jumped on his head and he didn’t even grouch at me! And Miss Bentley, Wow! What a special cat she is – who would have ever thought I would love cats! But Miss Bentley is no ordinary cat!

My biggest worry this week has been for my oldest sister, Porsche. She has cancer, and Mom and Dad call her their miracle puppy since she has survived many more months than expected. She is such a brave puppy and she is so loved. I’m pretty sure I wasn’t supposed to be listening, and Mom and Dad thought I was sleeping. I heard them talking the other night, “pillow talk” late at night, about how Porsche is doing and you could tell they were worried about her. Sometimes little puppies should not hear such adult human things. But it helps me know that I need to spend as much time with her and learn as much as I can while she is still with us. Most of the time she is pretty quiet, but nearly every night after Dad hand feeds her, she acts just like me! It is so fun to see and to hear, she gets so animated and playful. I love my sweet sister!!

This week will be fun! Mom and Dad brought out these big bags for us to sit on, something called luggage. I think they are really fun forts to hide in. I hear we will be having turkey and then we are going somewhere to chase seagulls! I don’t know what these are, but Dad says I will love them!!
